The Compton Arts Project
The Compton Arts Project is a series of multidisciplinary art exhibits, panels, and workshops, in recognition of Compton’s impact on arts and culture. The Project is produced by Sēpia Collective, a fluid artist collective based in Compton CA. The project follows in the path paved by The Compton Communicative Arts Academy, a community anchored multi-disciplinary arts institute which operated from 1969-1975 as part of the wide scale Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 70s. Programming for the project will culminate in a variety of community centered art activations throughout the city over the 18 months. The Compton Arts Project will highlight the extensive arts and cultural history of Compton and encourage a reemergence of the collective thought and work that anchors the city as a well-known producer of socially-engaged art and artists.
